Dr Nicholas J Walters BSc, MSc, PhD

Dr Nick Walters studied at the University of Hull gaining a BSc Zoology in 1975 and a MSc in Physiology in 1977 and was awarded a university scholarship in 1977 leading to a PhD in Respiratory Physiology in 1980.  He began his career in higher education in 1980 lecturing physiology to a range of students enrolled on courses leading to health practitioner qualifications. In the period from late the 1980s to the mid 1990s many of these professions sought degree status through validation exercises with universities, and Nick gained valuable experience when supporting development of these courses to achieve this degree status.  As a member of the validation panels which scrutinised these degree proposals Nick gained considerable experience in understanding the aspirations inherent in a wide range, and varied subject area, of academic institutions.  Nicks’ teaching also extended to Masters level when he was responsible for the successful writing and subsequent validation of three Masters courses. He was also appointed as an External Examiner for Masters courses at the University of Surrey and UNITEC in New Zealand.

In 1996 Nick left the University of Westminster to become Vice Principal at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine (BCOM) where he developed the exercise physiology laboratory and gave further impetus to the research undertakings of the College. In 1999 Nick co-founded the International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research (ICAOR) which was created to act as a shop window for osteopaths to present their research for peer review and to encourage the wider profession to actively engage in research, an aspiration that has seen significant advance. Nick has also been associated with a number of European Colleges supporting their academic development towards degree level.  More recently Nick has had extensive involvement in Quality Assurance assessment that has become standard in UK Higher Education and has helped direct European colleagues in their quest for validation.

Nick has been active in clinical exercise physiology research for over 30 years presenting at national and international conferences and publishing in peer reviewed journals.
